Chapter 4 The Self and Interaction
MASTER STATUS – A status that is always relevant and affects all other statuses we possess. (p 117)
Doctor Strange is regarded by the general public as an occult scholar or a best a charlatan of magic. Even to those fans of the Marvel Universe he is not thought of as a main stream superhero because of his powers. Doctor Strange story lines have been always in the area of the mystic or occult theme. As such in the past 10 years or so his popularity has dropped with readers because of powers and abilities are not of a physical nature but are of a mystical or magical type. This has some people wondering why Marvel is making plans for a movie.
Chapter 6 Deviance
STIGMA and DEVIANT IDENTITY-Erving Goffman's term for any physical or social attribute that devalues a person or group's identity and that may exclude those who are devalued from normal social interaction. (p 161)
By manipulating the ambient mystical energy of this universe, Dr. Strange can perform a great many functions. Commonly this is seen as energy bolts that range from low power to planet destroying he uses this mystical energy to cast spells of a near infinite variety . . .
Intangibility, Mystic Bolts, Banishment, Transmutation, Telekinesis, Flight, Teleportation, Protective Shields, Time Manipulation, Dimensional Travel, Conjuring of Objects, Various other spells. Dr. Strange would be considered a person of deviant nature because of his abilities, beliefs, and life style alone. Because he is so different in every way then main stream moral majority.
Chapter 8 Race and Ethnicity as Lived Experience
“Ethnic Options”: Symbolic and Situational Ethnicity (p 218)
Doctor Stranger is a member to a micro-ethnic group, the supernatural. Because of this he lives a very secretive life. The normal world see him as a magician or just a weird individual. Even though his life started out as a normal Caucasian from Nebraska and as he grew up to be one of the best Neurosurgeons in the world his life took a quick turn after he injured his hands in a accident. His pursuit to find a way to repair his injuries hands lead him to the supernatural arts. This left him as a outcast to main stream society because of his clothes, association with other sorcerers, odd groups like the Fantastic Four, Avengers and X Men. People like Spider Man, Thor, Sub-Mariner, Johnny Blaze (the Ghost Rider), and Blade.
Doctor Strange is looked at as a outcast, a oddity, or even a freak but he still stays on his job as the
Sorcerer Supreme of the Galaxy
Chapter 10 The Macro-Micro Link to Social Institutions:
Politics, Education, and Religion
Intrinsic Religiosity- A person's inner religious life or personal relationship to the divine. (p.308)
Doctor Strange life experience as well as powers he has obtained over the decades as a magician who has fought many battles in other worldly realms tells me that he is a man of great conviction to his trade. Through my extensive research on Dr. Strange I have found that he has studied under some greatest and powerful members of the mystic arts. This is not to say that the man is not of any religious faith but I believe he has great relationship with those of the divine then that of us mere mortals.
Chapter 5: Separate and Together: Life in Groups
Group Dynamics- The patterns of interaction between groups and individuals. (p. 134)
In his time Dr. Strange has been a Avenger, The Order, Defenders, and Midnight Sons. Each of these groups served the purpose of protecting the people of the earth whether it be from attacks by super natural forces or from other worlds. As in most groups there will be members who disagree on the course of action, what is right or wrong, and how to complete the goal at hand. This lead to Dr. Strange leaving the Avengers but he still has affiliation with the other groups I believe they are of super natural origin. This show that there must be a common association among members of a group for it to be strong and last.
